Metalphoto® Nameplates FAQ: Durable Identification Built for Defense and Industry

What is Metalphoto®?

Metalphoto® is a photosensitive anodized aluminum material developed by Horizons Imaging Systems Group. It embeds high-resolution images, barcodes, and text beneath a sealed anodic layer, creating a graphic that is virtually immune to abrasion, UV exposure, and chemicals.

Unlike printed or surface-etched tags, the image becomes integral to the metal itself, delivering unmatched durability for permanent identification.

Why is Metalphoto® used for military and aerospace applications?

Metalphoto® meets the durability and legibility requirements of military standard MIL-STD-130, which governs the identification marking of U.S. military property.

It’s trusted by the Department of Defense and aerospace OEMs because it:

  • Survives 30+ years outdoors without fading.
  • Resists abrasion, heat, and chemical exposure.
  • Maintains high-contrast readability for 2D Data Matrix barcodes and UIDs.

These properties make it ideal for mission-critical components, aircraft parts, control panels, and asset tracking plates.

What standards does Metalphoto® comply with?

Metalphoto® anodized aluminum is compliant with multiple military, aerospace, and industrial standards, including:

  • MIL-STD-130: Identification Marking of U.S. Military Property
  • MIL-DTL-15024: Nameplates and Identification Plates
  • SAE-AMS-T-9908: Photosensitive Anodized Aluminum Materials
  • A-A-50271 (CID): Commercial Item Description for Nameplates
  • AS9100: Aerospace Quality Management
  • UL / CSA: Safety labeling standards for electrical and industrial equipment

STRYKER’s nameplates are manufactured and tested to align with these specifications.

How does the Metalphoto® process work?

The process involves three main steps:

  1. Exposing: The desired image (text, barcode, or graphic) is developed into a photosensitive anodized aluminum sheet.
  2. Developing: The image is created inside the anodic layer, rather than on top of it.
  3. Sealing: The plate is sealed with a transparent, corrosion-resistant layer, locking the image beneath the surface.

The result is a high-resolution, high-durability image that’s permanent for the life of the component.

What are the benefits of Metalphoto® over traditional marking methods?

FeatureMetalphoto®Engraving / Etching / Printing
Image LocationSub-surface (inside metal)Surface-level
Durability20–30+ years outdoor useOften <5 years
Chemical ResistanceExcellentModerate to poor
ResolutionPhotographic (up to 2400 dpi)Limited
UID Barcode CompatibilityFully compliantOften unreliable
MaintenanceNoneMay require re-marking

What environments can Metalphoto® nameplates withstand?

Metalphoto® tags perform reliably in extreme conditions, including:

  • Outdoor exposure to UV, salt spray, humidity, heat, and cold
  • Industrial facilities with solvents, oils, and cleaning chemicals
  • Marine environments with saltwater corrosion risk
  • Aerospace and defense applications subject to vibration and thermal cycling

Because the image is sealed beneath the anodic layer, it will not peel, fade, or corrode.

Can Metalphoto® plates include barcodes or QR codes?

Yes. Metalphoto® supports high-contrast 1D and 2D barcodes, including Data Matrix codes required for Item Unique Identification (IUID) under MIL-STD-130.

These codes remain scannable even after years of wear, heat exposure, or cleaning.

What thicknesses and finishes are available?

STRYKER manufactures Metalphoto® nameplates in a range of thicknesses (typically 0.003″–0.125″) and finishes (matte, satin, or gloss).

Material and finish are selected based on the environmental exposure and mounting requirements of the end application.

Can Metalphoto® nameplates be customized?

Absolutely. STRYKER can customize:

  • Dimensions and thickness
  • Mounting holes, adhesive backing, or rivet options
  • Sequential numbering or serialized barcodes
  • Logos and part graphics
  • Black, silver, or selective color contrast options

Every tag is engineered for compliance and durability specific to your industry requirements.

How do I verify MIL-STD-130 compliance?

Always request a Certificate of Conformance (CoC) from your supplier. STRYKER provides full documentation verifying that each Metalphoto® nameplate meets MIL-STD-130 and related specifications. Our quality system is audited and aligned with AS9100 and ISO 9001 standards.
